5 Ways to Protect Your Skin in Summer

Published by Karyn Staples on July 24, 2022

In the summertime, we definitely want to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. But along with that comes the need to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Here are 5 easy ways to keep your skin looking and feeling great all summer long!

    1. Wear sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy outside

It’s no secret that summertime is the season for sunscreen. But did you know that you should be wearing sunscreen every day, even when it’s cloudy outside? Ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate clouds, so you’re still at risk for sun damage on an overcast day. In addition, UV rays reflect off of surfaces like water and sand, increasing your exposure. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

    2. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

As the summer sun creeps up, so does the importance of staying hydrated.  Water helps to regulate your body temperature.  It also helps prevent dry skin and protect against sun damage. When your body’s hydrated, your skin is better able to ward off the harmful effects of UV rays.  Stay hydrated by sipping water during the day and eat water dense produce like watermelon and cucumbers.   Keep caffeine and alcohol to a minimum.   And while sugary drinks may seem like a refreshing option, they can lead to dehydration. So next time you reach for a summertime beverage, make sure it’s packed with H2O.

    3. Stay in the shade as much as possible

One of the best things you can do is stay in the shade as much as possible. Seek out shady spots when you’re at the beach or park. When you have to be in direct sunlight, make sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.  If you’re hitting the beach or lake, bring an umbrella for coverage.  Avoid direct sunlight during the hours of 11am-2pm, when sun exposure is at it’s peak.

    4. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin from the sun

One of the best ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is to wear a hat and sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat helps keep your face and neck shielded from the sun.  Sunglasses can help to prevent sun damage to your eyes.  Light weight, long sleeves are great to protect shoulders and arms.  There’s clothing brands that put SPF directly into their clothes for added protection. If you’re fair skinned, this may be a great added protection.

    5. Use a moisturizer with SPF to keep your skin hydrated

One of the most important summer health tips is to keep your skin hydrated.   Drink plenty of water, but also use a moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.  Some women’s makeup can also include SPF protection.  There’s a lot of great products on the market that help you stay hydrated and protected from the sun.  Look for products that are “broad-spectrum”.   This means it will provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher, and be sure to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

That’s it! Follow these five simple tips to protect your skin during the summer.  You’re well on your way to keeping your skin healthy and looking great all summer long.
