This week on the ProHealth blog, we enjoyed interviewing long standing ProHealth patient and client, Pat Erskine. She shares her journey from Physical therapy to Pilates at ProHealth.
Hi, Pat thanks for letting us shine the PhoHealth client spotlight on you this week.
How and when did you begin at ProHealth?
I was first introduced to Karyn Staples and ProHealth in 2016. My primary care physician referred me to Karyn for Physical Therapy for neck and back issues from scoliosis. Several years of various athletic endeavors plus high impact aerobics created a lot of “wear and tear” as I became a “senior citizen”. Under Karyn’s expert care, I was amazed at the results of her physical therapy treatments – manual therapy combined with a personal daily exercise plan. The combination relieved the stress, strain and pain in both of those spinal areas.
What got you first interested in Pilates?
During our first physical therapy sessions, Karyn invited me to join her Reformer classes which were off-site until the new ProHealth facility was built and the Reformer classes moved there. I was immediately “hooked on Pilates” and the benefits that it offered.
What have been surprising benefits coming to ProHealth?
The Pilates exercises strengthen my core. It increased my awareness of posture and healthy ways to move, both in class and during daily activities. After 6 years of participation in Karyn’s Reformer classes, I’m amazed she continues to teach new movements/exercises in every class that achieve the same results. It’s never boring or repetitive and always fun! When the new ProHealth facility opened, my Pilates regime expanded to include multiple Mat classes every week.
All of the ProHealth teachers are highly trained, teach amazing classes, also filled regularly with new exercises. Every single ProHealth Pilates teacher is exceptionally nice and pleasant. It’s an outstanding team effort. A huge benefit during the Covid isolation time was the addition of virtual Pilates classes which allowed exercising at home, via Zoom, with the same terrific ProHealth teachers. These virtual classes are still available and much appreciated. Recently, I have had needed some additional neck & back physical therapy. Rebecca Fender O’Farrell, PT, DPT has been extremely helpful and is an outstanding physical therapist to address those needs.
Favorite piece of Pilates apparatus and why?
My first experience in Pilates was on the Reformer and it still remains my favorite piece of Pilates equipment.
What’s a Pilates/ Physical Therapy goal you have?
My goal is to continue with Pilates exercises with its many benefits for the rest of my life.
If you were talking to a friend who was on the fence about trying ProHealth, what would you tell them?
If I were talking to a friend who was considering coming to ProHealth either for physical therapy, I would highly recommend any and all of the trainers and therapists. My entire experience at ProHealth has been so very positive.
