How Pilates is Different from Yoga

Published by Karyn Staples on April 27, 2022

Are you looking for a way to improve your fitness but are unsure which exercise program is right for you? Yoga and Pilates are both popular options, but there are some key differences between the two. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at how Pilates differs from Yoga and explore some of the benefits of each.

    What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise and rehabilitative method developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It is practiced by millions of people worldwide and can be adapted to suit anyone from beginners to elite athletes. The pilates method emphasizes proper breathing, alignment, concentration, control, and precision. It also utilizes both the bodyweight and resistance exercises to tone muscles, improve flexibility, and promote overall well-being. Pilates has been shown to improve posture, balance, and muscle strength while also reducing stress levels. Pilates places emphasis on developing core strength.

Pilates can be done on a mat or on various pieces of Pilates apparatus.  Handheld props are often used to help modify or challenge the exercise.  Pilates movements are precise, therefore only a few reps of each exercise are performed.  Quality over quantity is key in Pilates.

    What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India. It’s a system of physical and mental exercises designed to promote health and well-being. Yoga is often used as a form of mindfulness, helping people to focus on the present moment and become more aware of their thoughts and feelings. There are many different types of yoga, but all styles share certain common elements, such as breath work, postures, and meditation. Yoga can be practiced by people of all ages and abilities, making it an accessible and inclusive form of exercise. There are many benefits of yoga, including improved flexibility, increased strength, reduced stress, and enhanced well-being. Whether you are new to yoga or have been practicing for years, there is a style of yoga for everyone.
