People were not created to sit all day.
In generations past, being active was a requirement of everyday life for most people to survive, as typical activities ranging from farming to routine housework all were tied to plenty of physical labor. In today’s world dominated by technology, more and more people are able to lead mostly sedentary lives on and off the job.
“Being more sedentary actually puts different stressors on our bodies,” said Dr. Karyn Staples, PT, PhD, NCPT of ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates Studio in Peachtree City. “It does create some changes in potential mortality.”
Spending so much of our day sitting can be harmful if we are not sitting correctly or incorporating enough movement into our routines. The results can often include pain in the neck, shoulders and back.
This is the reason for SITTING PRETTY, a one-time event scheduled for Tuesday, January 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Peachtree City studio.
Attendees will learn about how to achieve proper sitting posture as well as the harmful effects of prolonged sitting. This interactive session will allow them to explore movements intended to improve posture and counteract the effects of sitting.
“How we sit, how long we sit and in what environment we are doing it is really important,” said Staples. “How does one find the appropriate balance? That is what I want to be able to relay to people at this event, because sitting is inevitable for all of us.”
SITTING PRETTY will last around 45 minutes to an hour and will include active participation by all attendees. They will learn the best way to sit, how long is appropriate for one sitting, and some practical applications for counteracting some of that sitting time. People need to know how this can affect the body over the long term, and this is the time and place to gain that knowledge.
There is also a virtual option for those who cannot attend the live session or who prefer to participate in the privacy of their own homes.
“Come in clothes so that you feel comfortable moving around,” said Staples. “If you are doing it online, make sure you have a chair that you would normally sit in.”
Admission to the interactive workshop SITTING PRETTY is $30, or free with any purchase of a Pilates package. Prospective attendees are encouraged to reserve their spots as soon as possible, and to wear comfortable clothes, as there will be some movement in the workshop.
