Why Pilates is Great for Men – Top 5 Reasons

Published by Karyn Staples on May 5, 2022

Pilates is a unique form of exercise that is great for men who want to get healthy and stay fit.  Pilates focuses on core muscles, which can help improve stability and balance.  Pilates is low impact and accessible for any fitness level.  So if you’re looking for a new way to get in shape, give Pilates a try!  You won’t regret it.

    1. Pilates was created by a man

Pilates is a system of exercises designed by Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates was born in 1880, in Mönchengladbach, Germany. He was a frail child, and was often sick.  To improve his health, Pilates developed a system influenced by gymnastics, boxing, and wrestling. He called his method “Contrology.”

In 1912, Joseph Pilates emigrated to the United States.  He opened a studio in New York City, where he taught his methods to people from all walks of life.  By the 1950s, Pilates had become widely known, and is practiced by people of all ages and abilities today. Many professional athletes practice Pilates including Lebron James and NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown.

    2. Pilates originally was taught to men

During World War I, Pilates was interned in a prison camp in England.  There he taught his method to other inmates to stay healthy.  The military recognized his abilities and recruited him to help rehabilitate wounded soldiers. During this season, his students were all men.

    3. Great for cross training to prevent injury

Pilates emphasizes quality over quantity.   It can help men to avoid injuries caused by overexertion.  Many popular fitness trends use repetitive movements.  This can put a lot of strain on the same joints, over and over again leading to injury.   Cross training with Pilates can bring balance and flexibility to the body.   Pilates builds healthy posture and alignment.  This helps men perform better in other areas of fitness. With its many benefits, pilates is an excellent form of exercise for men.

    4. Low-impact exercise that is safe for most people

Pilates is a popular exercise regimen based on low-impact, controlled movements. Pilates is an excellent exercise for most people, including those with joint pain or health concerns.  With a focus on controlled movements, Pilates adapts to different fitness levels.   Beginners may start with simple exercises, performed at a slow pace.  More experienced students can move on to more challenging exercises. Whether you’re starting your fitness journey or looking for a change, Pilates is a safe and effective option.

    5. Builds Core strength

Pilates builds core strength.  It challenges the deepest layer of the abs, the transverse abdominals.   This improves posture, lessen back pain, and increases joint stability.  The external core muscles, side obliques and back extensors are also worked.  This helps to create a strong, balanced core that helps in all areas of fitness.  For men who are looking to build strength without bulk, pilates is an excellent option.
