Celebrating Milestones: Tracking Progress in Pilates

Pilates method founder Joseph Pilates said “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body“. Pilates progress isn’t always obvious or linear, but with consistent practice, you’ll experience benefits.

Small wins in your Pilates practice matter as much as the big ones. Being able to carry more groceries, or catching your balance with a momentary slip on ice can have a big impact on your daily life, as can gaining substantial core strength or eliminating back pain.

Whether your Pilates progress shows up with big wins or small, celebrating them helps you stay consistently motivated.

What Does Progress in Pilates Really Look Like?

Weight loss and a toned physique can be benefits of a Pilates practice. However, the benefits of the method are far more reaching than appearance alone. Common ways people experience progress in their Pilates journey include increased core strength and stability, improved flexibility and range of motion, better posture and body awareness, greater endurance and strength gains.

In sports, progress can look like improving speed, or executing an exact target like sinking a golf ball or making a homeroom.  In Pilates, the continual practice of working with deeper focus, muscular control, breath and quality of movement moves you forward. While being able to execute a teaser on the mat for the first is exciting and worthy of celebration, it doesn’t end there. The journey of working deeper and building on the foundational teaser can last a lifetime with multiple variations, and challenges.

Progress in Pilates is physical, but it’s also mental. The mindset about how we practice Pilates, not just doing it, is vitality important as well. This mental progress can be experienced in deeper concentration and a willingness to take on more advanced progressions with confidence.

    Common Pilates Milestones Worth Celebrating

Celebrating your Pilates progress is important to stay motivated and moving forward. Here are some examples of goal achievement milestones you can set your sights on:

    • Fitness milestones
      • Holding planks longer
      • Improved balance or flexibility
      • Performing advanced variations with control
    • Skill-based milestones
      • Better breath coordination
      • Increased mind-body connection
      • Improved form and precision
    • Consistency milestones
      • Attending classes regularly
      • Completing a set number of sessions

Why Tracking Pilates Progress Boosts Motivation

Keeping tabs on your Pilates progress may be beneficial for you. It’s easy to forget how far you’ve come when progress is small, slow and steady. In a world where fast gains and big wins are highlighted it is important to value tortoise progress over the hare.

Benefits of tracking Pilates progress may:

    • Build your confidence
      • Prevent burnout
      • Encourages long-term commitment
      • Helps you stay engaged during plateaus

Simple Ways to Track Your Pilates Journey

Tracking your Pilates journey is best kept simple, and tailored to what works for you.

    • Journal your fitness

If you enjoy journaling, note how movements feel, not just reps. Include reflection on energy levels, flexibility, and confidence.

    • Take photos or videos

Physical change takes time, but taking a simple photo or video every 3 months will likely give you feedback. If you do take photos, don’t limit it to a front and side physique picture. Have a friend or family member take a few while doing Pilates. This way you can growth in form and strength.

    • Ask your instructor for constructive feedback

Your Pilates instructor likely sees your growth more than you may feel it. Asking them to give feedback on what improvements they see in you may help open your awareness to a more in depth picture of your Pilates progress.

However you track your fitness, set short-term and realistic goals. Goals that are too daunting may leave you feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Remember to celebrate not only the progress, but your commitment to a healthy lifestyle and improving your wellbeing.
