Classical Pilates – What You Need to Know

Published by Karyn Staples on October 5, 2022

Classical Pilates is the original form of the Pilates method, and it’s still one of the most popular types today.  Pilates is a movement system created over 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates. If you’re interested in trying Classical Pilates, read on. I’ll explain the basics of Classic Pilates and how to get started.

    What is Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates practices the original teachings of Joseph Pilates.  Joseph Pilates developed the method in the early 20th century. Classical Pilates is often considered a more traditional approach to the practice.  It’s beneficial for those who are beginners through professional athletes.

Unlike other forms of Pilates, classical Pilates follows a specific order of exercises.  Each exercise is practiced in the original form taught by Joseph Pilates. Some classical Pilates studios teach variations of the exercises. But, a truly classic Pilates studio teaches the method the way Joseph Pilates practiced.

Like all forms of Pilates, Classical Pilates strengthens core muscles.  This includes the abdominals, hips, and lower back. It’s a low-impact exercise beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels. All exercises challenge your concentration, precision, and control. Pilates emphasizes quality over quantity.

How do I do Classic Pilates?

Classical Pilates is practiced in a studio setting or at home.  In a Pilates studio, you will work on specialized equipment.  Joseph Pilates developed a wide range of Pilates equipment.  The most popular pieces include the Reformer, Cadillac, Tower, Chair, and Ladder Barrel.

Online classical Pilates is available if you’re interested in working out at home.  You’ll need a small space and an exercise mat to get started.  Initially, Joseph Pilates taught his traditional method on the mat.  You can experience many benefits from a classical Pilates mat workout. For an authentic classical Pilates home workout, look for an instructor teaching the traditional classical Pilates method.

Is Classical Pilates the best type of Pilates?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to Pilates. The best type of Pilates depends on your goals, current state of health, and preference.  Try different teachers until the perfect fit clicks!Pilates is a great way to get in shape, increase flexibility and improve your posture.
