Pilates Apparel: What to Wear for Comfort and Style

Published by Karyn Staples on October 7, 2024

An essential part of your Pilates gear is your Pilates apparel. Choose well, and you’ll feel supported and comfortable, allowing you to focus on what you’re there for—your workout. Choose wrong, and you’ll think about the pinch in your waistband rather than how well you can scoop your abs during the hundred. Even worse, loose or inappropriate clothing can get caught on the Pilates apparatus, making you susceptible to injury.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss what fabrics to look for and what to remember when purchasing Pilates apparel.

What Can I Wear to Pilates Class

When dressing for Pilates class, the most important thing to remember is to ensure you can move well without distractions. Popular Pilates accessories for clothing include leggings, sweatpants, athletic shorts, t-shirts, bras, and lightweight sweatshirts. You can leave your sneakers at home; Pilates is done barefoot or with specialty grip socks.

What to Consider with Purchasing Pilates Fitness Clothing

When shopping for Pilates gear, like your clothing, remember you’ll want to choose clothes suited for movement, sweat, and personal style. Here are a few things to look for in your Pilates apparel.

    1. Look at the Fabric

    • Moisture-Wicking: To keep you dry, look for fabrics that wick sweat away, such as polyester or nylon blends.
    • Stretchy Materials: Choose stretchy fabrics that allow for a full range of motion, like spandex or lycra.
    • Breathable: Lightweight and breathable materials will help regulate your body temperature during a workout.

    2. Top Options

    • Fitted Tanks or Tees: Opt for fitness clothing that won’t get in the way during movements. For women, consider tops with built-in bras for maximum support and comfort.
    • Long-Sleeve Tops: Lightweight long sleeves can provide warmth without restricting movement in cooler weather.

    3. Bottom Options

    • Leggings: High-waisted leggings are a popular choice, providing coverage and support. Look for those with a good stretch and a non-slip waistband.
    • Capris or Shorts: These are great for warmer weather and more freedom of movement. Just ensure they fit securely. Shorts with built-in underwear will ensure you’re covered.

    4. Supportive Footwear

    • Grip Socks: Specialized Pilates socks with grip soles can provide traction and warmth. Some studios require grip socks; ask before your first class. Socks with or without toes are available.

    5. Layering Pieces

    • Lightweight Sweatshirt or Hoodie: Perfect for warm-up or cool-down periods, a sweatshirt is great for cooler seasons or in studios with air conditioning.
    • Wrap or Shawl: For post-workout comfort, a cozy wrap can be nice to have on hand.

    6. Pilates Accessories

    • Headbands or Hair Ties: Keep your hair out of your face for a distraction-free workout.
    • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential. Choosing a stylish water bottle can be a great accessory.
    • Keep Jewelry at Home: Necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings can be a distraction or even a hazard on apparatus. It’s best to leave your bangles at home.

What to Remember When Shopping for Pilates Fitness Clothing

Try Before You Buy: Always test the fit and feel of clothing before committing. Move around in it to ensure it doesn’t restrict you.

    • Consider Your Body Type: Different styles flatter various shapes, so find what makes you feel confident.
    • Invest in Quality: Good-quality pieces may cost more upfront but will last longer and perform better.

With the right Pilates gear and apparel, you can focus on your practice while feeling confident and stylish. Once you pick out your Pilates clothing, start your Pilates practice at ProHealth Physical Therapy and Pilates in Peachtree City, GA. The weekly schedule offers a variety of in-studio and live online Pilates classes.
